Health

Minister
For Public Health VISITS Local Bradford Community
2nd
september 2004
The Health Of Men Healthy
Living Initiative were today invited to meet with Melanie Johnson,
who is the Minister for Public Health, at the Royds Healthy Living
Centre, Buttershaw. The event was organised as part of the Ministerial
tour of the Yorkshire Region. The tour is the first of its kind
in that it encompasses the Secretary of State for Health John
Reid, Sir Nigel Crisp, Sir Liam Donaldson, the full Ministerial
Cabinet and many other Senior Department of Health officials.
The Health of Men Team
presented a review of the project in which Melanie Johnson and
the Chief Medical Officer listened and questioned intensely the
structure of the HOM project with special attention to the methods
of delivery most successfully used. Those participating felt this
was a worthwhile occasion as the Minister really understood the
key principals behind the Health of Men project, which was evident
in the subsequent radio interviews she gave.

"Examples from within the NHS include initiatives to introduce
health improvement programmes and basic health checks on men's
own turf-in working men's clubs on Tyneside, village halls in
Devon, pubs in Wolverhamptonand barbers' shops in Bradford. Indeed,
Bradford's "Health of Men" project, of which the barbers'
shop initiative is part, is an exemplar of good practice in the
field. It has just won the northern region health and social care
award, and I congratulate it on that achievement."
