The
Prostate Cancer Charity launches it's first African Caribbean
postcard campaign
23
july 2007
Wives,
daughters, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, mothers and nieces -
tell your husbands, sons, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, fathers
and nephews….. The message given today from the Prostate Cancer
Charity is that African Caribbean men are three times more likely
to develop prostate cancer than their white counterparts. As a
result the Charity is pioneering a new nationwide
awareness campaign by sending 20,000 free postcards to key locations
including beauty salons, social groups and African Caribbean supermarkets.
The
Prostate Cancer Charity believes that empowering African Caribbean
women with information could put them in a stronger position to
talk to the men in their lives about prostate cancer - the most
common cancer to affect UK men which kills one man every hour.
They
are inviting them to fill in a postcard with their address and
return it to The Prostate Cancer Charity. On receipt of the card,
the Charity will send out a free guide to prostate cancer with
information about how to find out more if they know someone who
has concerns.
Ali
Orhan , Community Involvement Manager at The Prostate Cancer Charity,
said: "We have been working specifically with African and
African Caribbean communities to raise awareness of prostate cancer
for three years. I have been very encouraged by all the support
we have received. The simple fact is that African Caribbean men
are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than their
white counterparts. So, it is vital to make as much noise as possible
about prostate cancer.
"Although only men can get prostate cancer, we know women
can play an important role in ensuring that the men in their lives
are given the best possible chance of beating the disease by knowing
more about the risk factors involved and being proactive if they
have concerns."
If
you are interested in ordering the postcards for yourself, friends
& colleagues or perhaps for an event you are organising, please
contact Ali Orhan at The Prostate Cancer Charity on 020 8222 7654.

hOW TO DO IT'
June
7, 2007
A new book is being launched
to help health professionals provide the best possible service
for men. It is based around the findings of the Health of Men
(HOM) project.
‘Men's Health, How to
do itl', by Radcliffe Publishers, will be unveiled by Alan White,
who is professor of Men's Health at Leeds Metropolitan University

the foreword is by Dr Ian Banks - president of the Men's Health
Forum - who has written many advice leaflets for the Department
of Health and books about male health conditions.
The book features illnesses
and conditions common to men, such as prostate cancer, advice
on healthy lifestyles, and public health information on issues
such as smoking, and obesity. It also covers topics such as how
best to set up health improvement programmes specifically aimed
at men, what approaches to take when targeting men and how to
persuade them to take better care of their health.
Professor Alan
White said: “ Bradford's Health of Men team are unique,
the city should be proud to have a service that is being envied

Men
& wellbeing - A conference about men
&
their mental health
Wednesday
October 11th 2006
10am-4.30pm Bradford City F.C. ground
The above conference on
men and their mental health, is jointly presented by Health of
Men and Mind in Bradford (Menzone). The focus is on how men display

they can be encouraged to seek help for them before they become
too entrenched or complicated to be dealt with easily or hurt
other people.
An interactive dramatisation
by ACT Forum Theatre will be performed on the day, which will
highlight some possible solutions to the above dilemmas; this
will build on themes in the new ‘Emotional Health' leaflet produced
by the Health of Men Project which will be launched on the day.
In addition there will be a full programme of national and local
speakers reflecting various academic, health professional and
service user perspectives. There will also be an open question
and answer session with the speakers panel.
The event is free and refreshments
and buffet lunch will be available

LEEDS
LGBT EVENT: OUR City
our Pride
August
6th 2006
Plans are well under
way for the Leeds Pride, a massive Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and
Transgender (LGBT) Pride in the centre of Leeds gay village.
The day launches
at 1pm with what the organisers hope will be a sunny, colourful
and celebratory start to Leeds first LGBT Pride Parade. A very
‘understated' pink open top double decker bus will lead off the
revellers, with a collection of floats, other vehicles and parade
walkers taking part. A spokesperson for the event has said “we
expect approximately 2000 to 2500 people to joining in”. There
is no set theme so let your imagination go wild and come along.
The parade route starts in Millennium Square, joining behind the
pink bus on The Headrow, down Vicar Lane and New Market Street
and into Duncan Street turning up into Briggate for the dispersal
point.
If your group
or organisation would like to take part, or better still, have
a float on the parade please contact the organisers.
The organisers
are hoping to attract about 50 volunteers who will assist with
stewarding the parade to ensure the safety of everyone along the
route. For those people who feel that they cannot manage the whole
route there will be transport provided. To volunteer or for more
information about transport please contact Mark at m.thomson@mesmac.co.uk
or call 0113 244 4209.
“There's been a real
buzz of excitement about Leeds Pride,” said Tom Doyle, Director
of Yorkshire MESMAC. “We've been bowled over by the support shown
by local venues and services. Many of them, like the New Penny
and the Basement Complex, are putting on special events to raise
money to support Leeds Pride. They've all been great about taking
time out of their busy schedules to attend planning meetings bringing
their expertise to the table.“
The team behind Leeds
Pride want to get people involved and are keen to hear from you
if you have any skills that you think might be of use in planning,
marketing and funding the event, or if you just want to help on
the day.

about volunteering contact Mark or Steve on 0113 2444209 or email;

PROSTATE
CANCER AWARENESS WEEK
20-26
March 2006
THOUSANDS of men are NOT
aware they are at risk of prostate cancer - even as they get older,
The Prostate Cancer Charity has warned.
The Prostate Cancer Charity Chief
Executive, John Neate, said: "Our ICM poll published today
found that 1 in 4 people over 55 did NOT think increasing age
was a major risk factor in prostate cancer - this is highly concerning
given the sharp increase in the incidence of prostate cancer with
advancing age".
"One in 11 UK men is now at risk
of being diagnosed with prostate cancer yet our poll paints a
picture of ongoing public confusion about prostate cancer and
the risks associated with it".
Launching The Prostate Cancer Charity's
annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Week (20-26 March 2006) John
Neate added: "The prostate gland is now the most likely part
of the male body to become cancerous. Knowing more about the risks
won't stop you getting prostate cancer but it will increase your
chances of spotting it as early as possible and getting it successfully
treated".
As part of a week of Bradford/Airedale
activities to raise Awareness of Prostate related problems, Health
of Men are running a Prostate pub quiz at The Turkey Inn at Goose
Eye, Oakwash, Keighley, March 22nd 8pm start.
If you have any queries
about prostate cancer call The Prostate Cancer Charity's confidential
helpline 0845 300 8383 which is staffed by specialist nurses and
open from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and Wednesdays from 7 -
9pm or visit www.prostate-cancer.org.uk
Health
of Men Conference,
‘The
Bradford Experience'
Banqueting
Hall, Bradford City Hall
10.30am
- 3.30pm , May 20th 2005
This
Conference is an opportunity to review the practical implications
of policies and practices currently addressing male health inequalities;
In particular the day will enable the Health of Men team to share
findings in delivering services and information to men through
innovative practices away from traditional health settings.
H.O.M
health workers have run workshops in schools on sexual health,
relationships, and bullying; they have also organised health awareness
events in the workplace, run sports/exercise and drop-in sessions
and held pub quizzes focusing on health. The Project delivers
to the Bradford/Airedale area, but its work is of truly National
significance as Men's Health steadily raises it's profile.
The
conference will also include a report on the recent evaluation
of the project by the World's first Professor of Men's Health,
Professor Alan White of Leeds Metropolitan University . There
will be plenty of opportunities to discuss and question the men's
health team and also network with fellow men's health enthusiasts.
Both Prof. White's report and the HOM Annual Report will be included
in the delegate pack.
It
is envisaged that the conference will attract a broad range of
delegates to it - including Public Health Managers, and those
working in Occupational Health, Health Promotion, School Nursing,
and the Community & Voluntary Sector.
David
Newman, HOM co-ordinator said: “Men's health is a concern
which has risen higher up the government's agenda and Bradford
is at the leading edge of new, innovative practices. The Conference
will make available the experiences of the HOM key-workers, to
both professional staff and educators”.
Please
click on the link to the right to download a delegate booking
form (pdf format) which includes an agenda for the day and directions
to the venue. Places are limited so it is advisable to return
this ASAP to book your place - Confirmation will then be sent
